Using MSCONFIG - Solving hanging, crashing , startup problems, and errors.

Are you having problems with your new fangled Windows XP system? Is it hanging and crashing? Or do you get errors while Windows is loading?

If you answered yes to any of those then you've come to the right place (hopefully). The most common reason for hanging or crashing on a machine is because a program running in the background is not behaving itself. Using MSCONFIG we can switch most of these programs off before they start, and then see if your machine behaves itself any better.

If you're getting errors when your machine first starts it's most likely because something in your Startup Group is not working properly - this could be because of a corrupted install or perhaps just a badly written program. Again, MSCONFIG should let us stop these programs before they start.

Click on the Start button and then choose Run. When the Run dialog box appears type in MSCONFIG and then press Enter (or click OK if you prefer).

You should now be presented with the window you see to the left. We want to select what does and doesn't start up automatically so choose Selective Startup.

You should now be able to see some more options that you can select. The main place that problem programs load from is the Startup Group so take the tick away from Load Startup Items.

Then choose Apply, and finally Click on OK.

Choose to restart

Ok, my system has restarted and I got no error messages. now what? Read the next page to find out how to narrow down what program is causing all the problems.
